On February 2, 2007, Dr. Anderson assumed his current responsibilities as director of the Homeland Security Studies & Analysis Institute (HSSAI), the first congressionally chartered, federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) for homeland security. Throughout his tenure, now as Chief Operating Officer, he has led the effort to expand HSSAI's influence and impact across DHS and to the broader policy community. His efforts directly contributed to Analytic Services Inc.’s winning a new FFRDC contract to continue operating HSSAI.
Dr. Anderson has over 30 years of experience in the government, the private sector, and the policy community. He developed and executed Lucent Technologies–Bell Labs’ government business strategy as Vice President of their Washington Operations. While there he focused on communications technologies for the public safety community. A skilled collaborative strategist, he developed targeted partnerships leading to significant growth for Lucent during his tenure.
Dr. Anderson was one of the early pioneers in developing homeland security policy and helped stand up the CSIS Homeland Security Program shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11. His work in this area helped shape our Nation’s thinking about how to create the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and about protecting our critical infrastructure. In addition to advising Bush Administration officials, he was relied upon by numerous media outlets for expert analysis of defense and homeland security policy issues and frequently testified at various congressional hearings.
Prior to his work at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Lucent, and the Bush Administration, Dr. Anderson was a career Marine Corps officer with significant command experience as well as international security, defense policy, and counter-terrorism experience.
In addition to his undergraduate degree, Dr. Anderson holds master’s degrees in public administration and international relations as well as a doctorate in education from George Mason University.
