Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute Issues 2011 Annual Report to Congress

Arlington, VA - The Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute (Institute), an operating unit of Analytic Services Inc., recently released its 2011 Report to Congress. The Report tracks events following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the development of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the accomplishments of the Institute. Report features include a timeline illustrating how the Institute’s work has been impacted by global events and has led to important decisions within DHS.

The Report highlights key studies conducted by the Institute with an emphasis on their impact to homeland security. Institute studies have covered cyber security policy, a framework national biological defense, private sector resilience, accreditation and certification, DHS grant programs analysis, workforce assessments, and risk assessment models.

The Institute’s study of the radicalization and violent extremism of school-aged youth for the Department of Education was prompted by the considerable increase in the number of young people indicted for terrorism-related offenses.

The Institute led a formal analysis of alternatives for Customs and Border Protection’s Secure Border Initiative network which showed that the choice of solution depended on factors such as the varying terrain, vegetation and infrastructure in different areas across the southwest border. Institute studies have also assisted DHS in its everyday operations, such as identifying the most critical needs of first responders in disasters, analyses of border operations, support to FEMA response operations, transportation security risk assessment, and training of Coast Guard law enforcement personnel.

Institute Director Phil Anderson noted “this Report exemplifies the breadth and depth of the Institute’s work and highlights the impact that our analysis is making. The Report underscores the critical work that our analysts do each day to help ensure a safer, more secure, resilient nation.”
