Arlington, VA - Analytic Services’ Corporate Fellow Elin Gursky, ScD, MSc, and CriSim International’s Toomas Timpka, MD, PhD, recently submitted a proposal as part of a contest to overcome the challenge of childhood obesity. With nearly 1 in 3 adolescents affected, the obesity epidemic in the U.S. poses immense long-term psychological and physical costs. The contest, the “Childhood Obesity Challenge”, is a collaborative endeavor of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Journal of Preventative Medicine (AJPM). According to the AJPM, the contest’s goal is to seek innovative ideas “that may not be captured by the traditional scientific publishing model.”
Analytic Services and CriSim proposed “The Magic Mirror”, an interactive web - based social media tool for adolescents to learn about and discuss issues of health, weight, and fitness. Founded on “trust, hope, evidence, and persistence,” “The Mirror” seeks to connect health professionals with targeted audiences in a manner that provides clear and actionable information. “Childhood obesity is largely a preventable condition that starts early but comes with a substantial legacy that diverts our Nation’s healthcare efforts away from unpreventable health problems,” said ANSER operating unit Senior Vice President Thomas Benjamin. “We’re confident that Drs. Gursky and Timpka’s contribution will aid the innovative spirit public health policymakers need for this challenge.”
