Regardless of whether you’re directly involved in combat operations or within a compartmentalized secure environment, biometric identity management is an efficient and cost-effective means to monitor personnel and mitigate potential threats. When the Department of Defense (DoD) needed a systemic solution to integrate its biometric information across the four Services, the ten combatant commands, and other interagency partners, Analytic Services exceeded expectations.

Working with the Biometrics Identity Management Agency (BIMA), ANSER, an operating unit of Analytic Services, provided:

  • Business process studies and analysis
  • Concept-of-employment development and validation
  • Strategy and implementation plan development and support
  • Enterprise-wide DoD Architectural Framework support and analysis
  • Integration, standards, and interoperability
  • Analysis of alternatives (AoA) support
  • Interactive biometrics integration workshops
  • Simulation and model-based systems engineering
  • Actionable recommendations

Author William Plomer once said, “Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected.” When attempting to connect so many stakeholders and massive amounts of information, creativity becomes a mission requirement. We knew that BIMA needed a detailed and unique solution, and today it's using what we provided.

About Biometrics and Identity Management

Biometrics is the application of analysis to biological data. Its history is deeper than most would appreciate and has been referred to as far back as 14th-century China, when merchants used their children’s footprints and palms as a means of identification. A common and modern-day use of biometrics can be found in fingerprinting, with more advanced instruments that identify voices or retinas gaining widespread implementation.

Today’s biometric challenge not only relates to collecting data in mobile environments but ensuring for a seamless and fully integrated repository of information for our military, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies to readily access. Possessing such capability will mitigate gaps in information that our adversaries currently exploit. Areas of responsibility where biometric identity management is needed include:

  • Customs, borders, and immigration
  • Deployed force protection
  • Counterterrorism
  • Critical infrastructure defense
  • Security and access control
  • Medical identity and authentication
