Vice Admiral Peter Neffenger, Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, speaks about U.S. Coast Guard Strategy at Distinguished Speaker Event

Falls Church, VA (February 20, 2015)

Vice Admiral Peter Neffenger, Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, spoke at an Analytic Services Inc. Distinguished Speaker Series event on February 18, 2015. In a presentation titled, “The U.S. Coast Guard in the Western Hemisphere: Combating Networks, Securing Borders, and Safeguarding Commerce,” Neffenger discussed the U.S. Coast Guard’s strategy to combat transnational organized crime, facilitate legitimate maritime commerce, and manage the marine transportation system in the Western Hemisphere.

Vice Admiral Neffenger addressed how transnational organized crime networks and associated violence and corruption in Central and South American countries present a destabilizing force in the Western Hemisphere.  He further noted that changes in global shipping trends, including the expansion of the Panama Canal and the proliferation of larger, more complex vessels, will complicate the challenge the Coast Guard and other DHS components face in identifying and combatting illicit activities.    Vice Admiral Neffenger discussed how the Coast Guard’s unique combination of authorities allows it to leverage law enforcement, national defense, regulatory, and intelligence capabilities to protect U.S. interests in the global maritime commons.

“The oceans and our waterways are key to our economic prosperity and our national security.” Dr. Ruth David, CEO of Analytic Services said, “We must secure our maritime borders, safeguard our maritime commerce and combat criminal activity on the approaches to our shores.”

Vice Admiral Neffenger serves as the 29th Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard.  Prior to his current position, Neffenger served as the Deputy Commandant for Operations, where he directed strategy, policy, resources and doctrine for the employment of Coast Guard forces globally. He is a recognized expert in crisis management, port security, and oversight of the commercial maritime industry.
